Generations Summary
Much of the information is from Jean Twenge’s book Generations, which explores the differences between Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Boomers, and Silents and their implications for America’s future. Another source is trenDNA by Darrell Mann and Yenta Ozozer, which focuses on understanding populations.
It is important to remember that these generations are very big picture and there is a lot of variation within each group. It is a helpful framework, but there are exceptions.
Silents—individuals who were born between the years 1925 and 1945, which places them at the age range of 80 to 100 years old in the year 2025. The defining characteristics that shape their generation are deeply rooted in the values of duty, honor, and sacrifice. This group is known for their strong sense of patriotism, unwavering loyalty, and deep respect for tradition and authority.
Boomers are people born between 1946 and 1964, making them currently 61 to 79 years old. The name "Boomers" comes from the 76 million babies born during that time. They are often active and hardworking, and they pushed for civil rights and equality. Growing up, they had many advantages that helped them build significant wealth. Initially, most worked in manual jobs during the industrial era, but many later transitioned to jobs in the information age, using their intellect.
Generation X includes people born from 1965 to 1979, making them 46 to 60 years old. They tend to be skeptical but are also resourceful and adaptable, having grown up as "latchkey kids." While many are doing well, they often won't earn more than their Baby Boomer parents. Some feel overlooked compared to people of diverse backgrounds, including those who are people of color, immigrants, and LGBTQ+. Most worked in the Information Age and experienced a significant decline in manufacturing jobs.
Millennials are people born between 1980 and 1994, now aged 31 to 45. They are often viewed as “special,” sometimes seen as lazy or selfish. However, they are very skilled with technology and competitive, yet also nostalgic. Those with Boomers as parents may struggle to achieve what their parents did in a simpler time, which can create resentment. The same is somewhat true for those with Gen X parents. While mostly working in the information age, they are beginning to realize the importance of developing new skills for the age of the heart.
Generation Z, who were born between the years 1995 and 2012, is currently within the age range of 13 to 30 years old. This group is notable for being the first generation to have a profound and distinct connection between the real and virtual worlds, which has resulted in heightened feelings of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) that older generations may not fully appreciate or experience in the same way. However, it is important to note that they also possess a greater array of emotional skills, which allows them to navigate their unique circumstances with a level of emotional intelligence.
Polars—2013 to 2029. Dr. Twenge has designated this particular cohort as Polars. This group of individuals was in their early schooling years during the COVID pandemic, so many of them may struggle to recall a time when life was markedly different and more traditional. They are encountering unique experiences and challenges that other generations have not faced in the same way. Additionally, there are two significant reasons that contributed to the choice of the name "Polars."
The polar icecaps are melting quickly, and climate change will significantly impact this generation. Additionally, there is intense political division, with the two main parties viewed as completely opposite. The beliefs of these groups can be deeply entrenched and divisive. Thus, the “Polars” face the major threat of climate change alongside serious political conflict.
Changes between ages can often be quite divisive and may prompt a wide array of reactions from individuals and groups alike. To navigate and succeed in these shifts effectively, it will be essential for everyone, particularly the Polars, to possess and develop the key skills that are characteristic of the Age of the Heart.
